From the get-go, the devs have shown her inner turmoil in subtle ways. After rescuing Johnny, she stopped Cloud from killing the security guys because she didn’t want to see more people hurt. When she pushed Shinra Middle Manager out of the cart, she said she didn’t want to see any more people die. She was the one that was most vocal about stopping Shinra from dropping the plate. And when the plate was dropped, she just sat there, nearly broken and in disbelief, Cloud had to pick her up. Afterward, when Barret was punching the rubble, she said “We did this….” not because she was being a pessimist or trying to bring Barret down, but because that’s what she’s telling herself. She blamed herself for all of it. And the “…Yeah” she said in response to Barret broke me. She was so unconvinced and angry. And I love that every time she feels powerless, she clenches her fist.
